This area is known as the gastronomic capital of France. Mushrooms, duck, walnuts, chestnuts, foie gras and the cuir noir (black bottomed pig) are nearly everyday ordinary fare. Soak up the atmosphere of the bi-weekly local market and discover all manner of local specialities. For the food lovers among you there is a michelin restaurant located 10k away in an old water mill in La Roche L'Abeille and they have now also opened a small cafe in the village itself.
The Nazi war-crime of the attack upon the martyr village of Oradour-sur-Glane was carried out on Saturday 10th June 1944 by soldiers of the Der Führer Regiment of the 2nd Waffen-SS Panzer Division Das Reich. On that day, without giving any explanation, they killed a total of 642 men, women and children, leaving only a few survivors. They then destroyed the entire village and to this day there is no universally accepted explanation for the massacre.

In 1765, a chemist's wife discovered a white substance in St. Yrieix La Perche near the town of Limoges, which she hoped could be used as soap. On analysis the white substance was identified as the purest Kaolin, the essential ingredient of porcelain. This discovery has led to Limoges' prominence in the production of porcelain. The first porcelain factory in Limoges was established 6 years later in 1771. Within a few years, the Limoges porcelain became a branch of the royal manufacture at Sevres producing porcelain blanks for final decoration at Sevres. A small town, Limoges was one of the oldest in the French kingdom. In the beginning one manufacturing facility was set up, rapidly followed by several more, prominently to meet the demands of European courts. The most prestigious artists of those days, painters in particular, became interested in this fabulous substance. As a result essential objects for daily use as well as decorative articles became available. Since then masterpieces were created and passed along generations worldwide. Some such articles can be viewed at the " Musee de la porcelaine de Limoges " the most important in the world for its specificity.

This B&B La Residence Limousin is a delightful. Beautifully appointed rooms with lots of detail, spotlessly clean and modern shower rooms. Each room is different and furnished in the style of the period of the house. The bed was one of the most comfortable we have slept in and the tea and coffee making facilities a bonus. Attention to detail is exceptional. The hidden gem is the walled garden with lush plants and areas to sit in. It's a hidden haven in a small historic town. Our hosts were exemplary. Friendly and amusing. we had a lovely dinner with them sitting outside in the walled garden. You feel more like a house guest than paying guest! Great breakfast and although parking is on the street we were able to park outside the front door. We would like to have stayed longer, we felt very relaxed.
